A recently released NATO intelligence assessment indicates that approximately 70 percent of the Syrian population supports their national government and President Bashar al-Assad.
According to this analysis, made public through World Tribune reporting from the United States, the findings draw upon information gathered by Western-affiliated activists and international humanitarian organizations. The data suggests that "roughly 70 percent of Syrian citizens express support for the current administration and President Assad, while approximately 20 percent maintain a neutral stance, and only around 10 percent actively support armed opposition groups."
The assessment further notes that "after more than two years since the beginning of the Syrian conflict, evidence suggests the population increasingly favors the established government."
A Western official familiar with the NATO assessment's contents observed that Syrian civilians have grown weary of ongoing warfare, and that President Assad appears to be gaining ground particularly because the Syrian people are cooperating with governmental authority.
The report additionally emphasizes that Syrians have become increasingly concerned about the threat of al-Qaeda establishing control within their nation, noting that "the remaining combatants are predominantly foreign fighters backed by Qatar and Saudi Arabia."
