A confrontation between radical left-wing activists and a group of skinheads, reportedly affiliated with far-right movements, inside a Paris shopping venue has resulted in the brain death of one of those involved, a young activist named Clément Méric.
The 19-year-old, accompanied by several companions, became involved in a physical dispute with three individuals inside a commercial establishment in the French capital.
Clément, a student enrolled at the Sciences Po political studies institute in Paris, was left in a state of brain death at the La Pitié Salpêtrière hospital this morning following injuries sustained during the altercation.
France's Interior Minister, Manuel Valls, attributed responsibility for the deadly assault to "far-right extremism" today, noting that the victim was recognized for his involvement with militant left-wing organizations.
In an official statement, Valls declared that the physical confrontation occurred "very likely due to ideological differences" and that "a left-wing militant was violently struck by multiple skinheads."
The minister expressed his determination that those responsible for "these unacceptable acts" be apprehended as quickly as possible, reaffirming his "complete commitment to eliminating this violence that bears the hallmark of far-right extremism and seriously threatens our republican principles."
Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Front (FN), stated today that her organization "bears no connection to this horrific" assault, in a radio interview with RTL.
A far-right organization called Revolutionary Nationalist Youth (JNR) also distanced itself from the incident, despite claims by radical left-wing activists that the aggressors belonged to their group.
Serge Ayoub, known by the nickname "Batskin," a prominent figure among Parisian skinhead groups, provided a telephone interview describing his version of events. According to his account, three young people and one girlfriend were at the shopping center when anti-fascist militants confronted them and threatened to "crush them outside. The security staff witnessed this. They asked the three young men and the woman to wait while they requested the left-wing radicals to leave the premises," Ayoub continued.
"As they were departing, the five left-wing extremists were waiting for them. Private security came out a second time to escort them away. A short while later, these five individuals were still lurking. At that moment, the leftists threw the first punches and chaos erupted." According to him, "the three young people had no choice but to leave, to get away from there."

1 Response to Fatal Altercation in Paris Triggers Anti-Fascist Response
Based on the article, it's evident who initiated the confrontation and sought trouble, with numerical superiority on their side. I've also read that the deceased died from hitting the curb after receiving a punch, meaning there was no intent to kill.
This could have happened to any member walking down the street.
